Frequently Asked Questions
Are you licensed, bonded and insured?
A & K Services of Iowa is a fully licensed, bonded and insured organization. Per Iowa Code 105, all individuals and organizations engaged in the performance of plumbing and mechanical systems shall be licensed. One of the requirements of being able to perform plumbing work as a contractor is to have liability insurance. This insurance must meet the minimum requirements of liability as set-forth in the Iowa Code. We are also able to obtain bonds as required on a per job basis. Bond requirements are generally set as a contractual agreement between a customer and a contractor (i.e., some projects require a bond to be in place, while others do not). As an additional requirement, all contractors, regardless of trade or operation, are required by the State of Iowa to register as a business. This registration is generally for tax and unemployment compensation purposes and is done through Iowa Workforce Development. It is always advisable for a customer to ask to see a contractor's license and insurance prior to any commencement of work.
Are you licensed in any other jurisdiction, other than Iowa?
A & K Services of Iowa is currently only licensed to contract work within the State of Iowa. We, however, are able to obtain, with minimal effort, licensure in other States if necessary.
What kind of training and how many years experience do you have?
A & K Services of Iowa has more than 30 years of field plumbing experience. Our experience includes a full-spectrum of plumbing and mechanical installations and repairs.
A & K Services of Iowa will happily provide references upon request on an in-person basis only. We do not list references publicly on our website or any other public means for the sake of customer privacy. Client privacy is of utmost importance to us and is something we take very seriously. Some of the projects we perform for clients are of a 'sensitive' nature and as such the details of those projects will never be given as a reference to past, present or future customers.
Do you offer a warranty for your work?
A & K Services of Iowa stands behind all projects and services we perform. If at any time a customer or client is dissatisfied with our services, we will, however we can and within our authority, make it right. Because of the diversity of services that we offer, our warranties and guarantees will vary depending upon numerous factors such as manufacturer warranties, conditions of use, etc. Please do not hesitate to have all of your questions and concerns answered in advance of work commencement.
A & K Services of Iowa does not have a 'standard' hourly charge rate. Instead of usually charging an hourly rate, we prefer to quote customers and clients a price based on total project or job cost. We do this because there are an infinite number of factors involved and no two projects are ever the same. Prices and costs are based off many factors, such as material cost, labor cost, amount of time required, level of difficulty, weather conditions, job site conditions and much more. We have found that this is the fairest way to conduct business with our clients and customers. As with all things in life, nothing is left to chance. We want your experience with us to be not only pleasant and professional, but affordable too.
Are you available in an emergency?
A & K Services of Iowa realizes that not every need arises during normal operating hours. We do the best we can to be available when you need us. If you feel you have an emergency that cannot wait until the next business day, please contact us and we will do the best we can to take care of you as quickly as possible.

As a service to both these groups, we would like to show our thanks by offering them discounted services. Please visit the links at the bottom right corner of any page on this website for a discount coupon.
What is the 'Plumbing Code'?
The reference to the 'Plumbing Code' is a general reference to a law as adopted by a governmental jurisdiction. In nearly all cases this law is usually based entirely or with some modification to the Uniform Plumbing Code® (UPC) or the International Plumbing Code® (IPC). The UPC is a publication by the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials and is published every three years. It is the current adopted standard in the State of Iowa. The IPC is a publication by the International Code Council and is also published every three years. As of 2018, it is the adoptable standard for plumbing and mechanical installations in 35 U.S. States and is occasionally referenced in the State of Iowa depending upon what jurisdiction work is being performed in. Neither of these are a federal law, but are typically adopted by states and municipalities in an effort to standardize their enforcement of plumbing and mechanical practices. In many cases, including Iowa and many of its municipalities, these codes have been amended and altered to fit the needs of the jurisdiction of the governing authority which have adopted it. Generally speaking, these are extraordinarily difficult publications to understand since they are written and designed to be used by lay persons only.
I heard I can do my own plumbing work, is that true?
Within the State of Iowa, an individual, who is not a licensed plumber may ONLY perform plumbing work on a residential structure and ALL of the following conditions are met:
the structure is a single-family residential unit;
the structure is not a NEW construction build;
the individual performing the work owns the residence in question, and;
the individual performing the work lives at the residence in question.
The work must meet all requirements of the current Uniform Plumbing Code® in force.
From a realistic standpoint, the above described requirements are generally extremely difficult to meet. Most individuals do not possess the adequate tools, training and experience to perform this type of work without serious Code violations and additional headaches and expense.
